Want to deal in commodities trading and hedge funds? Maybe you ought to turn on The Weather Channel and WSI Corporation. WSI, a subsidiary of Landmark Communications that also owns The Weather Channel, is a provider of weather-driven solutions for the insurance and financial industries. In an interview today, I asked WSI about yesterday’s announcement of a closer relationshiop with Pitney Bowes MapInfo whereby the companies are attacking the insurance industry with solutions to help them mitigate the risk of natural disasters through better weather forecasting. In my conversation with Sue Wilcox and Adam Champion of WSI they mentioned that some of their customers are hedge funds and commodity traders who view weather information, sometimes hourly, to understand commodity futures pricing. Oil and gas commodities are of particular interest because of the volatility of pricing during hurricane season. Energy futures, as managed by the utility industry, are another market in need of dynamic weather data and forecasting especially during times of inclement weather such as snow and ice storms where downed power lines will cause a spike in pricing.
WSI offers a web service of weather data that is integrated with MapInfo software and can be priced by geography or by "peril" (e.g. hurricane, tornado, wind).
