ESRI has introduced a program to integrate users’ authoritative imagery, street data and topography into its basemaps delivered via ArGIS.com and other means. Ada County, ID is home to 32 of the of the 64 plant species the state lists as noxious weeds.

To help keep them from spreading, the county hid four caches throughout the county, stocked with information about weed infestations and weed control efforts. Officials plan to hide more in the future.

Armed with handheld GPS receivers and maps, geocachers can track these containers, learn about the weeds, and log and submit the coordinates of any other infestations they come across. It makes sense to recruit geocachers. For them, going new places and discovering new things comes with the territory.

The caches include educational information. If geocachers find any weeds they are asked to document them and send the data via e-mail to the Weed Control team. Those who do are entered into drawings for prizes.

I wonder if you can get a Foursquare badge for checking in at a weed?

Today comes word of another iPhone app for those traipsing in the oil laden coasts of the U.S. This one comes from UMass Amherst. This free app can connect (I guess by phone?) the finder of oiled wildlife with the Wildlife Hotline (not sure who runs that) and then upload information (pics, GPS, etc.) to a database at UMass. Will that data get to a central data collection of oiled animals? Is there one?
