Update: Similar things happening in Australia; no longer using commercial provider: “All PSMA products removed from #GoogleMaps AU… Web 2.0 geospatial data licensing fail.”

Greg Sterling notes that the Tele Atlas copyright is now playing “peek a boo” in Europe, appearing in some countries and not in others. This is after Google noted updates for ten countries, including some in Europe. He’s checking with Google. I’ve contacted Tele Atlas.

That was a question over on SlashGeo. I contacted RIM.

Rik Temmink, VP of global product management for TomTom, speaking at the Location Business Summit in Amsterdam, said that crowd-sourcing when it comes to digital maps doesn’t lead to subjectivity and low standards but can lead to much more accurate results.
I really like reporter cian reflection on the topic:
I remember when I first encountered the OpenStreetMap project - it’s a completely user-generated world map, created to offer an open source alternative to services like Google Maps and TeleAtlas. At the time I thought, “can user-generated maps ever really compete with the big boys?” It turns out that the question is redundant - the big boys are already doing it.
