This podcast features Chris Butler, Independent LBS Evangelist. Butler discusses "Location, Awareness" and the context in which it applies to mapping and social networks. It is a high level, compelling, but inherently intuitive lecture on how context – who, when, where, why, what, and how – is valuable to your application, product or service. We usually try to answer one, maybe two of this variables when designing our next hot widget; Butler challenges us to include not one or two but all variables. However he gives us a few rules to conceptualize and effectively implement the process. For all persons interested in taking their application to the next level, this is an excellent presentation.
[Produced by: Clay Burton Productions and Endpoint Environmental LLC, Producers of the Web 2.0 Mapping and Social Networks Meetup Group in conjunction with Directions Media. The presentation was recorded at Google headquarters on November 18, 2008, and lasts for approximately 18 minutes.]

In an exclusive interview, Judson Green, president and CEO of NAVTEQ spoke with Directions Media Editor-in-chief Joe Francica about a broad spectrum of topics related to the growth of the location-based services market and the ability of NAVTEQ to address an exploding market for digital map products. Mr. Green spoke of the opportunities for NAVTEQ not just in terms of his current ability to serve a variety of market segments but provided some insights in what may be possible in the future with NAVTEQ data. "Don’t think of our map going into a nav system in the front seat of the car; think of our map going into the engine of the car to help drive the car…and therein you find dozens and dozens and dozens of applications which would fundamentally improve the safety of the car, the productivity of the car, the efficiencies, and we think that’s a very exciting area,” said Green. Mr. Green, once the president for Walt Disney Attractions, now has the challenge of sorting through the opportunities that range from real-time dynamic content to advanced driver assistance systems.<br>
The interview was recorded on June 10, 2008 and lasts for approximately 20 minutes.

Location-based mobile alerts is a pet peeve of mine. I’ve been following the developments about how the average citizen is alerted to emergency situations: natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and more localized events that could cause alarm. It seems like every few months we hear of another campus shooting. As a parent, it’s a chilling situation.
In addtion, more is being done to abide by The WARN Act, the Warning, Alert and Response Network, signed into legislation in 2006. In this podcast, Tim Lorello, chief marketing officer of TeleCommunications Systems, provides an update on his company’s technology that will assist cellular carriers to provide location-based alerts.
