Japan's Strategy Headquarters for Space Development has decided four satellites will be enough to created the high accuracy GNSS currently in development. The original plan included seven satellites, but the cost, along with the rebuilding due the earthquake is too high. Officials say the four will still create the needed accuracy, but drop the cost for completion (one bird is in orbit) frm 230 billion yen to about 150 billion yen. A final decision on the number of satellites is expected as early as this summer.

Local and Regional Transport Minister Norman Baker put forward a proposal to let local have more control over how their roads appear on maps and satnav systems.
Currently, any change in classification requires approval from the Department for Transport. If approved the new rules will let local authorities make the decisions and simply report them to the Department. Further the eight forms required for notification will be cut to just one.
Among the goals says Baker for the current request for comment:
“We are also using this as an opportunity to invite new ideas of tackling some of the problems caused by satnavs, for example lorries being directed down unsuitable roads. We want to hear suggestions as to how the current system could be improved and how councils could better work with satnav companies.”

It’s frankly sad that there needs to be an iPhone app called TomTom Now. The $2 app allows you to paste a “one field” address in, that’s then parsed and sent to the TomTom app. Why? The TomTom app makes you input each field separately.

Sony’s NGP (confirmed today, DVICE among others has coverage) will include GPS functionality, so of course there’s a tool to track yourself and the games going on around you. “An application built into the device called “Near” is an ongoing map allowing you to track where you are and where you have been. Near connects with the PSN to find out what games are popular in your current location, allowing you to buy games on the spot and jump into impromptu Hot Shots Golf tournaments if that’s what everyone’s playing.”

News 8 [WFAA Dallas/Ft Worth] found nearly every popular online map service has outdated information, even though the stadium has been greeting fans for more than a year now.
How to deal with this issue?
It has prompted Arlington officials to urge the more than 100,000 visitors to simply turn off their GPS and go to the host committee’s Web site for accurate directions to the stadium.
But the local TV station is working to get to the bottom of this situation.
News 8 was not able to contact representatives from the popular online map sites to find out if their maps will be updated to reflect road changes in Arlington before the big game.
