The Berrien County, Michigan, Geographic Information System (GIS) is holding a seminar to introduce its new GIS provded by Schnieder Corporation. The session is free (I think), but using the GIS is not.
The cost of using the GIS website is $15 per day or $50 per month plus a processing fee compared to the previous website price of $10 per hour plus a processing fee.

There are allegations the tourism board in Joplin, MO is handing out maps to encourage visitors to the tornado ravaged area. Officials say the map was created to respond to direct requests, rather than to promote such visits.

Moscow has spent 20 billion roubles on its own map, hoping it will be used to crowdsource data on streetlight outages and the like. It should be online next month at atlas.mos.ru. The city feels maps from Google and Yandex can't do that job. I think Esri is doing the mapping.
Sergei Scherbina, Deputy Director at ESRI CIS- Moscow map service developer says the Moscow informational site will be updated frequently with more information and services for users.
Open data proponents are wary of the new map and how embeddable it may be.

The City Council of Bainbridge, GA has an agreement with the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government to develop a GIS (Geographic Information System) for the City. The $45,000 will put 7,300 parcels online in about four months.

Last week, OpenRisk LLC, announced that they received an award for a new Platform as a Service (Paas) solution for the insurance industry that allows access to risk models to underwriters. These geospatial information-based models estimate “the potential financial damage to a portfolio of properties resulting from disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes and floods” according to the executive overview provided by the company. To run these complex catastrophe models, OpenRisk will host their solution on a supercomputer and give access to insurance, reinsurance or brokerage firms via a cloud service. “The idea is to enable the insurance industry to share our supercomputers rather than host the models internally, including the costs of IT support, hardware upgrades and high-cost PhD-level staffing, said Jim Aylward, CEO. QuantGeo needs both a CEO and funding to launch its hyperlocal real estate data offering. I didn't follow the (too long) video on exactly what problem they are solving found on the company homepage. I found the CEO and funding ad on craiglist.

Alteryx announced several new enhancements to their data modeling and analysis engine at their Inspire 2010 Conference in Broomfield, Colorado this past week.
For version 6.0 (released in January), enhancements include seven new tools to support behavior analysis and integration with market segmentation tools. Users will be able to take a segmentation data set, like Mosaic, and bring in cluster data, then append and use it against other processes. Data from Experian and PopStats can also be integrated and thematic maps can now be generated from a customer file. New macro types were introduced including iterative processes that allow the user to loop through records and repeat the entire process as many times as specified, or until a condition is met. The 6.1 release issued in February includes new charting tool improvements, versioning, a C# plug in API, speed optimizations and support for a Canadian geocoder.
For version 7.0, due out in November 2011, there will be several enhancements for mapping and browsing that include editing styles, ordering layers, publishing wizards to the web, and thematic enhancements.
The Alteryx SaaS/PaaS architecture extends the Alteryx desktop functionality to the web. This month, Alteryx also released improvements for DemographicsNow.com that include mapping enhancement (labels and annotation) as well as new wizards and the ability to leverage the MetaCarta article search technology that looks for geographic references within text.
On premise/cloud-based solutions due out in July will include a deployment option for the Alteryx web platform that will allow clients to install the platform on the internal servers. In addition, users can host Alteryx wizards without requiring any customizations or permissions at the user level. One key feature is that installation of the platform, with all necessary requirements, should not require a database administrator.
