“Trustee Mike Dunaway said since GIS Coordinator Kier Dirlam left the village to become a county planner last summer, Wellsville [NY] has not been able to do any GIS mapping.” The village is taking bids to finish up a mapping project begun the year before and hopes training a few people on the new software will keep the new database up to date.

Columbia County, GA will spend $158,000 on aerial photography. It’s contracted with High Point, N.C.-based Spatial Data Consultants, which has held the contract since 2004. The company won the contract “in large part because it processes its information domestically.”

The price is $28,250 savings from the 2009 mapping program, which includes a $10,000 contribution from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which is using the imagery for The National Map.

Bowie Central Appraisal District’s Global Information Systems satellite tracking is helping assess property tax value and appraise land more accurately.

I think they are using imagery, but the rest of the article is behind a pay wall.

It took 15 years and $21 million to clean up the Spaulding Fibre industrial site in the City of Tonawanda…. a new tool debuted by Erie County leaders on Wednesday could drum up even more interest in the parcel.

It’s an interactive website that uses geographic information system (GIS) technology and allows developers to take a “virtual tour” of each of the county’s more than 30 industrial and business parks, including the Spaulding Fibre and the North Youngmann Commerce Center near the I-290. The site also features two sites in the Town of Tonawanda — Riverview Solar Technology Park and Colvin Woods.

The website can be accessed at http://www.ecidany.com and clicking on the Industrial Parks GIS Site Selector tab at the top of the home page. The link directs visitors to ShovelReady.com, a site maintained by National Grid.

Members of the Severn River Association (SRA), Maryland, were recently briefed on how the county’s website now allows citizens to assist with Chesapeake Bay watershed restoration efforts. Included in the briefing:

[SRA Steve board member] Barry then showed the group how to use the GIS on the county’s website to calculate the percentage of the impervious surface of any given lot in Anne Arundel County. Impervious surface is an important factor because a greater amount of impervious surface leads to a greater amount of storm water runoff.

Among the tools for planning the new New Orleans is GIS. “Estimating a neighborhood’s growth in three or five years’ time was even more challenging. “We worked with demographers and created a point map on GIS”—geographic information systems—“which showed where people were living and where they were moving back to,” Bingler [architect Steven Bingler of firm Concordia] says. ” That’s key in forming the Nexus vision he’s put forward, with schools anchoring new neighborhoods.

The town of Medway, MA is live with MapsOnLine, which “uses geographical technology that allows residents to zoom in and out, identifying specific parcels, town buildings and trails. It was created by Arlington-based PeopleGIS and uses information collected from town departments and the state.” The core code is MapServer.

Unlike the state’s tool, this one includes county roads.

THE Dubai Municipality (DM) launched the Dubai Map 2010 (not sure why it’s not 2011), the third official map of the emirate.

The third map has gathered all the data about the Emirate of Dubai such as updated names and numbers of areas, names of roads, intersections, bridges, tunnels, and the names of government bodies, development projects in the emirate with details of projects under development and that have been completed, in addition to the list of medical services such as hospitals and clinics, tourist services such as hotels, restaurants, commercial centres, recreational areas and parks, service companies and bank locations.

The first map was launched in 1994 and and the second one in 2000. Now the frequency will change for the map, which comes in three sizes (pocket size, normal size and wall size): It’ll be updated every 6 months.

In Barnstable, a town in Massachusetts, the local pols are making their plans for 2011. This one is interesting:

Precinct 13 Councilor Greg Milne plans to join fellow councilors to question the results of the 2010 census. They show, he says, an “exodus out of Hyannis. Something is wrong. We want to use GIS (the town’s Geographic Information System) to show us the homes that are empty. The houses still have lights. Many communities are challenging these census numbers.”

Delhi Township (Michigan) changed its GIS position from part time to full time. “The township’s Global Imaging System is heavily used, prompting a part-time position to go full time, according to officials.” Two trustee voted against, citing financial challenges.

Using GIS mapping, Yakima county estimates there are at least 8,000 private wells in the Lower Valley. Environmental tests have shown that about 21 percent—or 1,680—are contaminated with nitrates beyond what the federal government considers safe. So, the county is sending out test strips to identify which wells might be contaminated. A more thorough test could make residents elegibile for free filters funded by the state.

Here’s an ROI number for tracking garbage trucks in Dallas: “the GPS system saved the city about $677,000, nearly paying for itself.” The system cost about $700,000 and the data come from a city hall briefing (pdf).

Greensboro [NC] City Council members turned down a technology grant that would have installed GPS in all local buses, so that passengers could get minute-by-minute information about when buses will arrive at stops. Council members said they didn’t think the $83,000 annual cost of the software would be a good use of city money.

Ninety percent of the startup costs would have been covered by the state. I for one think it’d be worth it. (We LOVE our system here in Boston, though we know it’s not perfect.)
