The Board of Regents next week will consider state Education Department recommendations to make the global history and geography exam optional. Instead, students could take an additional math, science or vocational exam, starting with freshmen who enter high school in 2013.

Why? To focus on STEM topics that relate to jobs. Historians are noted as complaining, but no geographers.

Beltway companies are digging in when it comes to growing more students (aka future employees) in STEM (science, technolgy, engineering and math). Northrop Grumman aims to put half of its charitable giving into STEM education. And BAE is working specifically on geospatial STEM.

This summer, BAE Systems plans to host a month-long program in Reston meant to introduce at-risk high-schoolers to the kind of geospatial technology BAE has created to help the military and intelligence agencies see information on maps.

The idea, said Josh K. Weerasinghe, vice president for global market development in BAE’s intelligence and security unit, is to move students “over this hurdle from an interest to something that’s very real, that makes them look at college as really a positive alternative.

How do you get good summer GIS coders? Hold a contest. That's what Snowflake Software did at  the Electronics and Computer Science program at the University of Southampton. The prize for the winner of the Code-Off is a summer internship.

The hotly contested event involved first and second-year Computer Science students, and saw many innovative approaches to the task, which was to visualize some OS MasterMap GML data from Ordnance Survey. The winner at the end of the day was first-year undergraduate Computer Scientist, Hendrik (Henco) Appel.

Ian Painter, Managing Director of Snowflake Software, comments: "OS MasterMap from Ordnance Survey is the most detailed map in the world – we’re talking hundreds of millions of map features. So firstly scalability in reading the data is very important. Henco’s selection of the SAX parser was a really good choice (especially given that he’d never used one before). Next up was displaying the data - to render OS MasterMap is no mean feat, so seeing some extensive use of Graphics2D was again a good choice. Finally, and what stood out the most for me, was Henco’s use of the attributes on OS MasterMap to enable the switching of the data themes. All in all Henco’s coding covered the three key areas: importing, displaying and interacting."

A pair of California State University Stanislaus students are conducting the mapping project for the city as interns, using equipment on loan to Newman from Stanislaus County.

There is no word if they or the school is getting paid.

Allen County will abolish most fees previously charged for county maps and will join 85 other counties participating in the IndianaMap initiative.

...The county will continue to charge for customized mapping or for printing a map, but map fees ranging from $85 to $15,000, depending on the detail of the request, were eliminated.

Southwest Regional Police Dept (that includes Pittsburgh, PA) is the first in the Commonwealth to get the RAIDS crime mapping system. So why is there never a direct link to the maps?

This useful text is from the SWRPD blog:

Residents can now view the criminal activity in their communities online, free of charge. Visit the “RAIDS ONLINE CRIME MAPPING” link under “COMMUNITY-ORIENTED POLICING” tab to begin analyzing. Residents are reminded that only incidents reported to SWRPD are mapped using this service.

This from the local paper:

The information is available on the crime map at www.raidsonline.com or at www.swrpd.us using the community-oriented police link.

The second link from the paper (to another blog post) has this link to the map. Is there a legal reason you have to search so hard to actually see the map?

A new system has been developed that can estimate the scale of crustal movement within minutes after a big earthquake, much faster than the system widely used now that takes more than five hours to do so, government officials and academics said Friday.

The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan and Tohoku University began testing the new system using the satellite-aided global positioning system Friday, aiming to start full operation in fiscal 2013.

Vanderburgh County, Indiana thinks it has a first:

It['s] called "VC Election Office," and it allows voters to see locations and estimated wait times in real time.

The free application, available on Apple- or Android-based devices, was created by Mark Rolley Consulting, Inc., the company the city and county contracts with for several information technology services.

Kirk said, "We are the first county — period — to have this kind of an application." Matt Arvay, the city's chief information officer, said that's based on research by the leading geographic information systems (GIS) software company, ESRI.

Does anyone else know of such as app? I wonder how they estimate wait time and submit it to the app?

Azavea's first "Summer of Maps" is inspired by the Google Summer of Code. The program will offer stipends to student GIS analysts to perform geographic data analysis for non-profit organizations.  Azavea will match up non-profit organizations that have spatial analysis needs with talented students to implement projects over a three-month period during the summer.

Timeline:

 * Feb 28 – Mar 16 – Non-profit organizations can submit brief proposals for spatial analysis projects to Azavea
 * Mar 17 – 20, – Azavea will review organizations
 * Mar 21 – April 2 – Students submit proposals and applications
 * April 2 – 13 – Top candidates are interviewed in Philadelphia
 * April 16 – Azavea announces successful Summer of Maps fellows
 * May 14 – August 31 – Summer of Maps fellows work on spatial analysis projects

Azavea is looking for:

Non-Profit Organizations

 * Combine your data with other demographic and geographic data
 * Get high quality maps that can be used to make a case to funders or support new initiatives
 * We want good analytical projects that ask challenging spatial data analysis questions - we're trying to avoid projects where we're just putting dots on a map.  Some examples might be:
  -> Arts - analyze geographic location of ticket sales and donations to both identify existing clusters and untapped markets
  -> Environment - develop fund-raising plan based on geographic prioritization
  -> Food - identify three potential sites for a new soup kitchen and perform a market analysis to determine how each will affect existing sites
  -> Housing - analyze housing needs to determine the best site for a new low income housing development
  -> News - Combine several data sets to show patterns in a city government's expenditures
  -> Land and water - develop green infrastructure plan that maximizes impact of stormwater interception
  -> Transportation - identify the next 10 streets for the addition of bike lanes by scoring all street segments based on a variety of geographic criteria

 * Those who are interested or know an org that is can apply via a Google Doc by March 16.

Students

 * We want people who are either living or can live locally in Philadelphia for the summer
 * Work on a spatial analysis project that supports the social mission of a non-profit organization
 * Work with Azavea staff to improve your GIS skills
 * Receive a monthly stipend
 * Gain work experience implementing a GIS project
 * Applications will be made available in mid-March

On a personal note, I met the Azavea folks at a business GIS event years ago where they showcased their pro-bono work for a local non-profit arts organization. They've impressed me with their commitment to education and service ever since.

Valdosta State (GA) Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences Professor Jia Lu was selected to give a guest lecture at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia on Jan. 29. The university does not teach GIS.

Dr. Lu delivered an all-day lecture titled “How GIS Technology Can Help Protect Saudi’s Environment”, during which she discussed how the Saudi government can use geographic information systems (GIS) to help bridge traditional environmental science methods with cutting edge mapping analyses. The lecture was delivered to graduate students studying math, computer science, engineering and environmental science.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana will be using Esri technology to teach GIS. Some departments already use GIS, but the hope is to have it used across all departments.

- KNUST News

Esri announced a new package of lab activities that use its products, but which could probably be used with other packages.

FM Global has two paid, 3-6 month GIS internship opportunities positions to offer to students that are motivated to apply their classroom experience, professional attitude, and personal ambition.  GIS Specialist Interns will support FM Global’s GIS initiatives, including ad-hoc mapping requests, map data development/maintenance, and GIS environment support/enhancements.

These are in Johston, RI. I have a vested interest in this company; it was one of my clients back in the day and had a very sharp GIS team.
