India

In Chandigrarh, the utility administration is setting up a GIS with a primary goal of tracking and getting payment from those who steal electricity. Before getting a new hookup, new users would need to clear previous payments.

Italy

Alongside the pizza makers and syrupy folk singers, unlicensed parking attendants — well-known in Italian as parcheggiatori abusivi — are traditional Naples characters central to the city's folklore.

And now their old — albeit illegal — pavement-pounding profession is going high-tech: a Google Maps page is providing all the relevant information about Naples' 150 or so unlicensed parking areas, from availability to expected fees.

What's interesting is that the maps probably will not help the local police get the folks running the lots to stop. They can only prosecute when a driver makes a complaint and it sounds like that doesn't happen since the service is appreciated!

Republican lawmakers have pulled the plug on the state’s landslide mapping unit, terminating a controversial project to assess which slopes in the mountains are landslide prone.

A team of five state geologists working on the maps are being laid-off this week, saving the state $355,000 a year.

Indianapolis is latest city to get a mobile app to report issues that need attention to the city. It started as a Web portal last June.

The city of Indianapolis announced the new RequestIndy mobile app Tuesday morning. It allows residents to report problems and to request city services from the Mayor's Action Center.

The City of Austin has a new crime viewer, but it's not one of the national services I'd heard of (like CrimeReports.com). It does use SliverLight, though. It uses to be using a tool called RAIDS (free for law enforcement and the public) from Bair Software and built on Google Maps.

While Google touts new features in Google Maps 5.7 for Android (beta) related to better navigation in public transport (and notification about reaching a public transit stop) a la TravelNapp), tech pubs are all over a much requested feature: the ability to download maps for when cell service is unavailable. Yep, it's in there.

This new version of Google Maps adds the ability to download maps to the phone for navigation on short trips into areas without web connectivity. Before heading into the no service zone simply download the map for the area. Downloaded maps can also be used for offline searches in addition to navigation. Being in areas without connectivity gets a lot more bearable with these downloaded maps.

India
Disclosing this here today, Local Bodies and Industries Minister  [of Punjab] Mr. Tikshan Sud said that GIS would be started in the cities including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Bathinda and Pathankot by October 31st of this year, which would be further implemented in remaining districts of the state.

Sud said that under this prestigious project of National Urban Information System, a total 137 cities has been chosen from across the country for initiating GIS and out of total 6 cities of Punjab has been adopted. Elaborating the GIS, the Minister said that with the implementation of GIS by October this year, complete information of these cities would be complied on GIS.

Chennai, the city in India is getting bigger. And GIS is involved - or at least Google Maps.
The delimitation of wards will be crucial to the expansion. The corporation set the boundaries for the delimitation based on census 2001. A special geographical information system (GIS) cell at Ripon Buildings worked on the boundaries using Google maps, a web-mapping service application from the popular search engine. The nine municipalities, eight town panchayats and 25 village panchayats were given print-outs of these maps to mark the boundaries. "These were then converted through GIS software and geo-reference boundaries were developed," sources told TOI.

China

WellPoint's affiliated health plans have launched an emergency room program and education campaign incorporating Google Maps to make it easier to find and use retail health clinics and urgent care centers for non-emergency conditions when regular physicians are not available.

CEHI's Community Assessment Project [Durham, NC] aims to measure the role of such factors on human health, particularly that of women and children. Researchers will layer the data gleaned from the May-September field collection with current information on tax values, crime, demographics and locations of health care providers, schools and day care centers.

This summer's collection will cover 30,000 tax parcels and look "for everything from foundation damage, to dead animals, to security signs. He said the scale of the study, involving such a great chunk of the city, makes it stand out from others he's reviewed."

The Community Assessment Project is tied to a birth outcome study called Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby in which pregnant women are assessed during doctor's appointments for health and quality of life. The health of their babies is assessed after they're born, and information about their neighborhoods figures into the overall analysis.

Why might readmissions to the hospital in one Denver Zip Code be so high? Mapping the data on health care and the nature of the community might help reveal the answer.

One northwest Denver ZIP code in the readmission pilot stood out with high rates of elderly residents returning to the hospital. Overlaying census data for the neighborhood shows an area in transition, with new Latino families moving in and white homeowners aging in place.

[Jane] Brock [medical officer of the Colorado Foundation for Medical Care] said further research could explore whether aging homeowners have few connections to their new neighbors and don't seek help with rides to the drugstore, grocery store or doctor.

Pilot studies are combing tabular and spatial data to help address this challenge: The sickest 1 percent of patients spend nearly 30 percent of a health system's money.

A study that geocoded malaria cases in Brazil and used LANDSAT data (in a way I don't quite follow) confirmed:

Environmental factors and their alteration are associated with the occurrence and spatial distribution of malaria cases in rural settlements.
