Missouri Representative Jo Ann Emerson who’s supported the USGS facility at Rolla since it was set for closure was recently appointed to the subcommittee for the Department of Interior Appropriations, which includes USGS and the Mark Twain National Forest.
In addition to an open house last week, she met with USGS staffers. She discussed “earthquake preparedness and seismic monitoring using the facility’s vast expertise and technical resources. She said she is doing her best to save USGS…”

It’s a sign of the times when your hometown paper calls you out for a mashup you made. Uxbridge native Ian Stevens is famous because he “invented” (per the headline) a map of the Toronto Transit System.
Ian Stevens, now 31, graduated from Uxbridge Secondary School (USS) in 1994 and is currently working as a software developer in Toronto. “(At USS) I took two of the offered programming courses… It wasn’t until the Grade 12 course that I considered software development as a career path,” explained Mr. Stevens.
