This week two news items peaked our interest: Good Jobs First, a Washington research center, released a report giving mediocre grades to state websites that aim to be transparent about the distribution of federal stimulus dollars. One of the criteria considered? Maps. Second, is there a trend in local news related to sat nav? Is there a move away from “two techs capturing data” stories to how users can get involved with collection and update?

This week we take a look at YourStreet, at one time a cutting edge hyperlocal site that tapped into key location technologies. Last week in an e-mail the company explained that due to cost it was dropping maps. The upside? Pages load faster. We’ll try to think through the logic of this move and the future of hyperlocal news.

Many media outlets offer interactive maps to explore current data on the upcoming U.S. elections including the option to create you own scenarios by assigning states to candidates. How do the sites compare? What’s missing? Our editor’s praise USA Today’s implementation along with Yahoo’s and find at least one laughable offering. Hear about their likes and dislikes and how these interactive sites reflect the state of technology in the media and the demand for social tools.
