The Motley Fool comments on DigitalGlobe's (DGI) poor earnings, a loss of $.02 per share, and its resulting nose dive in stock price. It's most interesting comment was this: "Good PR doesn't trump bad profits." On Wednesday, May4, the market reacted to the company's quarterly report by sending the stock down from $28.72 to $25.82, a drop of 10% even though the report was within analyst's consensus estimates.

An MIT project uses a vehicle with an inexpensive low-resolution IR camera (< $1000) has been used to show heat leaks in Cambridge, MA homes and an army installation (Fort Drum in New York). Researcher Long Phan and Research Scientist Jonathan Jesneck, working with Professor Sanjay Sarma, developed the system; they hail from MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering Field Intelligence Laboratory and hope to use the scanner to track exactly where energy savings can be greatest.

Scientists, activists and global health agencies have this year used World Tuberculosis day, March 24 to highlight the threat of drug-resistant strains of the disease. Among the tools to tackle it in South Africa is GIS.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoalediis expected to make an announcement about the purchase of GeneExpert machines [which speed diagnosis and manages treatement] later on Thursday. Public Health officials’ use of “innovative technology” such as Geographical Information Mapping Systems (GIS) to track and map persons infected with tuberculosis is expected to further advance the surveillance and management of those cases in The Bahamas, Minister of Health Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis said Thursday.
The comments came during the annual observance of World Tuberculosis Day Thursday, March 24, 2011 which I guess is getting to be more connected to GIS all the time.

"The demand for imagery from Japan has really run the gamut of our customer base," Steve Wood, vice president of DigitalGlobe's analysis center, said.
"I am sure we will (look at new tie-ups). We are going through such a busy period. We are getting all kind of requests," said Wood.
Governments and business are all looking for data from the company since the earthquake. The company may look for more partners (the company already work with Hitachi in Japan) but would not acknowledge if they are in talks with any big international players, Apple in particular.
