With no warning from either side comes the bizarre news that Autodesk, specifically the infrastrucure/BIM part is hooking up with Pitney Bowes "to help infrastructure owners and architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) organizations make more informed decisions and drive greater efficiencies across the plan, design, build, manage lifecycle of infrastructure."

This week our editors turn their attention to branding in the geospatial world, in particular how companies position their #1 and #2 and perhaps #3 offerings in several categories of geospatial offerings. How are the #2s doing from a branding perspective? In short, there is room for improvement. At the end of last week’s Geodesign Summit ESRI made it clear it wanted the community, not ESRI to lead the concept forward. ESRI is not the first to attempt to free ideas or products made within corporate walls - consider Google’s KML or Autodesk MapGuide. How well have efforts like this worked in the past? Can you ever remove a product or idea’s origins?
