Update (2;30 PM EST): The OSM Foundation Blog reports on how OSM is used and that apporpriate attribution is not yet given in the apps. (How can a huge company like Apple NOT know to do that???? Do you know how to attribute CC content? No? Time for some homework!)

Wednesday night was full of excitement from the geospatial fans of Apple, which anounces its new iPad and apps easlier in the day. The upshot seems to be:

Apple's new iPhoto uses OpenStreetMap data for much of the world outside the US. How about that for #switch2osm?

James Fee suggests that U.S. data is simply TIGER.

Apple's been acquiring mapping companies over the last few years and its no secret that at some point the company would begin to break ties with Google which is becoming a rival on many levels.

There's still a bit of confusion on what mapping data, geocoding and other tools are used in different parts of the world and in different apps.

PanoMap, based in Florida, filed a patent infringement case against Apple and Google last week.  It's really about the display of data, not the capture and thus the allegations are against big users of these types of display.

The patent, US No. 6,563,529, was filed back in 1999 and issued in 2003. There are a total of 28 claims in the patent, but the broadest of them essentially cover a mapping system that displays a wide map view in combination with a more detailed view of location specifics. The claims also require synchronization of the two views.
As I see it, the invention here is what I call "active overview maps" and I have to believe there may be prior art from desktop GIS, if not a sense of obviousness.

The Localscope team wrote to share this news:

Apple has announced the much awaited Rewind 2011, considered to be the Oscars for the Appstore, presenting the best Music, Books and Apps of the year. We are honored and ecstatic to be chosen by Apple as the #1 App in the navigation category in the US Appstore and in the top 5 Navigation Apps in most other countries.

It's not an app I hear much about at all. Per the website: "Localscope is your social data powered GPS app."

Boulder-based PlaceIQ, a startup collecting location based information about the world, has raised 4.2M in a Series A funding--but is moving to New York City. The startup--headed by Duncan McCall--said the funding was led by US Venture Partners, and also included Valhalla Partners, IA Ventures, kbs+p ventures, and Jerry Neumann. The firm said it is moving to New York to be closer to the advertising industry.

Google is acquiring the Silicon Valley-based startup Clever Sense, both companies are announcing today. Clever Sense, as you may recall, is the maker of the mobile application “Alfred,” which delivers personalized recommendations for nearby restaurants, coffee shops, bars and nightclubs using a combination of artificial intelligence and machine-learning algorithms.

I've never heard of the company or product. The plan is for the team to join Google Places (not something you hear about much) and perhaps have the tech be used in Schemer.

And one more fine from South Korea:

A South Korean regulatory body has fined Apple up to $3,000 fauthorized collection of data on iPhones.

In a statement obtained by AFP on Tuesday, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) said, 'KCC decided to fine Apple Korea three million won for collecting location data despite the withdrawal of consent by some users."or the un

While Apple did re-up with Google for mapping (APB coverage), a close look at the disclaimers (full text) for the new operating system reveals a long list of well-known, more obscure and even some crowdsourcing mapping players per MacRumors:

• CoreLogic offers Parcel data which marks boundaries for of properties to provide positional accuracy in location-based solutions.
• Getchee provides location and market data on China, India and Southeast Asia.
• Increment P Corp provides location and traffic data for Japan.
• Localeze provides local business listings.
• MapData Sciences Pty Ltd. Inc provides mapping data for Australia and New Zealand.
• DMTI provides postal code data for Canada.
• TomTom offers global TeleAtlas mapping data which is also licensed by Google for their map solution.
• Urban Mapping provides in-depth neighborhood data such as crime, demographics, school performance, economic indicators and more.
• Waze offers real-time maps and traffic information based on crowd sourced data.

The most interesting one on the list is Waze, which is cited: "Map data © 2011 Waze." Note, it's not traffic data, but map data. One of waze's goals is to build its own map the US (as it did in Israel). So, it' could be Apple is using part of the Waze's basemap and/or tapping it for traffic data, too. That'd be a huge bump for the company and may also be the "user generated traffic" app Apple hinted at after the "storing your data" fiasco.
