What is GIS for the Google generation?

Dr Pablo Mateos spoke (on behalf of a missing Alex Singleton) at the 2008 ESRC Research Methods Festival on "What is GIS for the Google generation?"

The ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) is a network of research groups, each conducting research and training in an area of social science research methods.

The slides are here and it's tough to tell from them the exact nature of the discussion Still I tease out:

- need to distinguish GIS from today's visualization (GIS = science, much of the rest = visualization)
- today's users are part of a "volunteered" generation and users of social media
- need to "make sense of" the "points on a map" situation and explore metadata

There are some valuable (if uncited) stats and images.

How I view it is that a GIS works fantastically for producing data and doing analysis. One thing I do think, however, is that for most people in an organisation a familiar interface such as Google Maps enables staff to explore GIS information in a friendly format and understand how each bit of data interacts.

Separating Google Maps from GIS is potentially a mistake as these lightweight mapping clients (both desktop and web based) are how many people in the future will consume GIS information. Much the same way that the '.doc' extension started out purely as Microsoft Word but is now accessible by many word processing applications, the GIS will need to produce standards based files that can be shared and analysed by any desktop user.

As a GIS professional I admint that I find it somewhat unsettling at the uptake of Google Maps however this is perhaps more for selfish reasons than concern for the industry.
