PC World: Google Street View Makes U.S. Govt. Uneasy

That's the headline. I read the article - twice. And, I didn't get that impression. The one quote that is not a new idea, is from National Geospatial Intelligence Agency public affairs officer Dave Burpee. He said, "in a perfect world, for the support and defense of U.S. troops, it would be better if that [detailed imagery] wasn't there."

PC World put in the bracketed info, not me. Which detailed imagery? The preview steet level imagery from Microsoft and recent similiar Google offerings currently limited to the U.S.? Or, detailed aerial and satellite imagery of the entire world on those and other sites?

A link in the article says, "Lance Ulanoff agrees with Burpee. Read why here." If you read that article you find that Ulanoff does find it creepy but confirmed to his satisfaction you could not identify people's faces on the streets of New York from the street level imagery.

Sometimes I wonder if it's similar to the 'grandpa effect'. You know - where you show someone of an older generation something on the computer, and they get freaked out by how advanced it looks to them - but they really don't have a clue what it's all about?

But then they're willing to release public concerns, even though they haven't had any analysts (people trained) to look at any of it? And then they'll say that our discussions 'aren't very constructive' as a knee-jerk reactions to taking any responsibility toward their own missteps in initial analysis.

Anyhoo... Yeah, something like that.
