Define: Neogeography

National Geographic dubs the current revolution in online mapping not "mashups" but "neogeography.":

The trend has been dubbed neogeography, and some enthusiasts predict it could spur a revolution in electronic cartography.


Which enthousiast coined the term (which I heard for the first time today)? Platial co-creator Di-Ann Eisnor. Oh. Okay. Sure.

I'm really trying to get used to those outside our industry "taking over" from us (per Bill Thoen's note here, see#3), honest! But, I'm the first to say this term makes me cringe!

Don't forget, not everyone started in the GIS industry. I only immigrated to the geo scene in 1992 or so, and still have not actually used a GIS system to do anything. So I might be considered a neogeographer by some.

But I know what you mean.

I heard of that term long before i heard of Di-Ann Eisnor. I think the term is a nicer way of saying GeoWanking.

Plus the term mashup is so lame in my opinion. It means nothing except two things brought together. Neogeography communicates something completely different to me.

GIS must be main stream, we now have fashion in our terminology. Perhaps in the fall we could use neocadastralism for real property mapping on the web.

I do not find neogeography nearly as offensive as geospatial.
