VA Fitness meets Geography and other Education GIS News

Roanoke County's Glen Cove Elementary fourth- and fifth-graders wear pedometers to participate in the "One Step at a Time" program which incorporates the state's Standards of Learning and rols in geography, phy ed and math. P.E. teacher Bill Pratt designed it.

There also is a U.S. geography component to the program. The pupils use their classroom mileage totals to take an imaginary trek across the 50 states in an effort to reach capital cities. Students this week used the mapping application on iPod Touch devices to determine the distance between two capitals.

"It is going to take me seven days, eight hours to walk from Topeka, Kansas, to Denver, Colorado," said Daniel Cook, 10.

I'm curious which of the geography ed standards it addresses.
