USDA Stimulus Project Map

It’s got a name you’ll love to hate.

It’s called “USDA ARRA GEO-Spatial Map” on the main USDA recovery page. The Google Map mashup shows USDA money has been allocated from the stimulus package thus far. It debuted yesterday on President Obama 100 Day Anniversary.

You can search by geography, agency and amount funded. The map transitions from a choropleth map at small scale to a point marker map at large scale. You can even use a “map data” link to see and comment on the raw data, though I found no way to download the data easily.

This is a very slick implementation; I’m disappointed federal agencies haven’t decided on a standard way to share recovery information on maps and via tables. It looks like it varies from agency to agency. USDOT for example offers only PDF maps. Still, I am pleased there are maps and they tend to be easily findable… I will note that Dept of Interior, home of USGS, seems to have no maps on its recovery page or agency pages.
