Update: Some Updates on Google Maps Data Issues

Update: On 12/15/09 Google sent an e-mail confirming the error I found corrected 12/7/09. So, while Google is not implementing corrections within 30 days (but is close), there’s also a delay in communicating the corrections to the submitters.

The Chicago Tribune runs down the litany of odd and old names of regions and Points of Interest in the Windy City. The best comment suggests the author be a grown up and buy a map from (local company) Rand McNally. I continue to be amazed that Google has not received more flack of these and other oddities.

On another matter, it took me two tries to get Google’s attention regarding the misgeocoding of my street (original post). On Oct 23 I sent in a second “problem report.” On Oct 25 I received this confirmation:

Hi ,

Your Google Maps problem report has been reviewed, and you were right! We’ll update the map within a month and email you when you can see the change.

Report history
Problem ID: E176-3579-9E42-682D

Your report: Not a one way street. Also geocoding is backwards.

Thanks for your help,
The Google Maps team

I gave Google a few extra days in December and the geocoding was still wrong yesterday (I used a MapQuest link to send a friend a map to my house). But today, it’s fixed, though I’ve not been notified of the fix. It seems in my case at least Google is not keeping up with its “one month to fix” promise. Still, it’s nice to have my house at the bottom of the hill instead of the top!
