Update: Air Force to Rearrange GPS Satellites to Better Cover Afghanistan

Update: Eric Gakstatter at GPS World explains the changes in more detail - and notes that better cover for Afghanistan is but one interpretation of the change. Another? Increased accuracy - especially for surveyors.

Current plans dictate that new satellites be positioning alongside the ones they are meant to replace. Over the next two years the Air Force will spread them out to help better cover the mountainous areas of Afghanistan as requested by military planners. This is possible in part because the “old” satellites are lasting longer than expected.
