Update: A few new datasets available from Yahoo

Now comes version 2! “Version 1 of the dataset had shapes for around one hundred and eighty thousand (180K) WOE IDs, and now we have shapes for roughly two hundred and seventy thousand (270K) WOE IDs. Woo.” The dataset is under CC0 license (public domain). And, if I understand correctly, the originals were not Esri shapefiles but in Yahoo’s own XML. The new data is in GeoJSON.

(Observation: The Yahoo post was 1/8/11 and this is the first I heard of it. Yahoo’s relevancy is sadly lower than ever in geo.)

First off, the shapefiles built off the geotagged Flickr photos is now available for download. Second, you can get the WEO IDs database. Details. The are under different Creative Commons licenses.

The “data” in these have been available via API, but if you want them local for some reason, now’s the time to download.
