Update: UK Home Office Crime Map Crashes at 75,000 Hits/Minute

Now with things somewhat settled down, the Home Office is considering expanding the crime map:  "by adding photographs of offenders and more details about their offences to online crime maps."

The Home Office website, www.police.uk, has a tool where residents type in a postcode to see a map of crime in the area. It went online on Today. But with 75,000 hits per minute, the site ground to a halt by late morning. There are some issues - like coding incidents at police stations when there is no known location - but there is clearly interest! The £300,000 project provides, for the first time, information about different types of crime and behavior at the street level.
