Tweetdeck Chooses Yahoo for Mapping Tweets
I have a soft spot for Yahoo Maps; I always have. The company started out using DeCarta’s platform, then went its own way with in-house tech in 2005. But in recent years you hear little of it, even from Yahoo’s own CEO (APB coverage).
So, I was cheered to see that Tweetdeck, one of the key Twitter desktop clients, has chosen Yahoo Maps to map its tweets. It uses a static map to pinpoint geotagged tweets, which gives some users pause. Why not Google? Programmable Web explains that it’s likely due to Google restriction on using static maps outside of Web interfaces. And, a commenter notes that Yahoo’s map data (NAVTEQ) may at this point be better than Google’s “home grown” data.
