TomTom Invites a Group to Map the Islands and other GIS Competitions

On June 1, TomTom announced a competition for five families or groups to to spend two weeks on a tropical island (Fiji, St. Lucia, Mauritius, Cape Verde, and the Seychelles) and earn 10,000 euros ($15K) for their mapping efforts. The all expense paid trip requires the group to drive around in a specially equipped car. 

To win, a family or group must fill out a form including writing a 200 word essary on "how they like discovering new places, have a decent sense of direction and would appreciate great weather and fabulous paradise settings.  he winners will be judged on the creativity and content in their application describing in 200 words or fewer how they like discovering new places, have a decent sense of direction and would appreciate great weather and fabulous paradise settings." Applications are open for two weeks for each island. Nine runner's up for each island will get a TomTom device.

The geographic information systems (GIS) team of the Misamis Oriental provincial government in The Phillippines won a competition among local government units under the Australian-assisted Philippine Provincial Roads Facility.

The team was selected “in recognition of its outstanding presentation of its (GIS) application demonstrated by its creative, effective and innovative use of GIS tools and methods into developing GIS-based technology systems and services for sustainable resource allocation and socio-economic development in the province.”

The Geographic Travels Geo-Literacy Outreach Award is intended to find new ways to successfully advance Geo-Literacy in the public.  Its aim is to assist in the establishment of unique programs to educate the public on the importance of geography and spatial thinking. Through these programs, Geographic Travels wants to promote an atmosphere of learning, collaboration, and independent thinking to increase geo-literacy.
The awards are $300 and $200 and can be non-school based efforts. Applications are due Oct 1, 2012 with recipients announced Nov 2, 2012.
