The Wild West of UAS/Drone Education Programs
One of the hot topics in geospatial education/training revolves around creating quailified UAS/drone pilots. Not only do pilots need to be meet certain regional requirements, but sometimes their organizations must also hold a credential to do commercial work. Here are some data points about this growing indudstry.
Unmanned Vehicle University is not Accredited
Accreditation: UVU is not currently accredited. We will start the process in March 2014. We have hired an expert that has experience with our accreditation agancy. Our students are being hired before they graduate . One student took the UAV Fundamentals Course, attached the certificate to his resume and obtained a job for $100,000. Another student is interviewing with the FAA Unmanned Systems Integration Office.
One Week Course in Australia
Ultimate Position Group (UPG) offers a one week piloting course that provides most of the requirements for getting the Remote Piloted Aerial System (RPAS) certification required in that country. The gory details of the rest of the process (including course prerequsites for the individual and an Operators Certificate for his or her company) are provided in a pdf FAQ. That FAQ is the best place to start in understanding all the steps to becoming a UAV pilot in Australia, whether you choose this company's courses or not. UPG's one week course is AU$3000 + GST.
Unmanned Engineeria, based in India, claims to be the only and R & D/trianing site in Asia to offer a variety of full and part time programs and certificates. It recently reached out to Directions Magazine to be a partner of some kind and promised it could provide our publication to all its students. As you know, our publications are free to all worldwide already.
