State of Open Data in One County and other Government GIS News

Most of this data is considered ‘live’ and is continually updated, (as needed) by Richmond County GIS Staff. This site uses the products of ESRI as the map server. Other options to view the data are available by calling the GIS Department staff.

That's the state of affairs per Richmond County, NC Planning and Zoning Director of GIS James Armstrong. He made that statement at a workshop to introduce the new Web GIS.

Richmond County Daily Journal

The County [Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada] has launched its new ‘Parks and Recreation Finder’ map – a free guide for park goers and recreational enthusiasts – on the County website.

It gives users access to more than 50 local parks and County-specific recreational facilities with detailed information, amenities, hours of operation and directions.
The Parks and Recreation Finder is available on the Prince Edward County Maps webpage, at: http://maps.pecounty.on.ca Also located on the same link is a public map viewer of the County.

The tech? Esri.

India is investing in mapping its groundwater.

India, the second-most populous nation, will boost spending to map underground water resources more than seven-fold to 33 billion rupees ($552 million) as the overuse of wells depletes aquifers, an official said. ...

The water board plans to raise the scale of geographic area to be mapped from 1:250,000 to 1:50,000 for more accurate readings, Gupta said. Data will be made available publicly for farmers to improve water-resource management and for companies’ planning strategies, he said.
