State GIS Tidbits
State GIS news from Tennessee, Louisiana and Massachusetts.
Governor Phil Bredesen announced the recommendation of 22 Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grants on May 1. One would fund GIS:
Southeast Tennessee Development District GIS Upgrade Project: $11,055
The grant will assist the Southeast Tennessee Development District in upgrading the Association’s Geographic Information System (GIS) capability to assist local governments in the recruitment of Volkswagen suppliers to the region, which includes Bledsoe, Bradley, Grundy, Hamilton, McMinn, Marion, Meigs, Polk, Rhea and Sequatchie Counties. The project will be located on the Cleveland State Community College campus. Funding for the $22,110 project will include $11,055 in local funds and other sources.
Louisiana is using GIS for more than just mapping H1N1 viruses: “DSS [Dept of Social Services] is using Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping of schools and child care centers to help identify child care centers that might be affected by schools that close because of a confirmed case of the H1N1 flu virus.”
Last week the commonwealth announced that the GIS agency (MassGIS, the state’s Office of Geographic and Environmental Information) will participate in block level broadband mapping for western counties. It will take four months and tap into stimulus monies.
