Situational Awareness on a Surface

DRS Technologies offers a Global Situational Awareness solution that includes all the buzzwords: multiple data overlays including “UAV videos, schematics, photos, SAR, IR” and a touch screen built into the table display. But, it has some twists I’ve not seen in similar devices.

The technology was shown off at the Navy League conference last week in Maryland. Users can draw on the screen, watch live video and share subsets of the information with other devices. You can even pipe in apps running on other machines on the network in discrete windows.

Even though related technologies have been around for many years, this is new hardware and software: “The console’s hardware has been under development for about three years, the software about one.” The company hopes to trial the solution at this year’s Trident Warrior exercise. The Naval Network Warfare Command arranges that effort to test the Navy’s latest communication technologies.
