Saginaw Gets New Crime Mapping Tool and other Government GIS News

Sagniaw Michigan is the latest city to use CrimeDAR for its crime mapping. I'd not heard of the app but it's build on Bing Maps. There is room for improvement in the cartography.

..., the Florida Forest Service is equipping its frontline firefighters with GPS units that provide location points on supervisors' laptops.

The agency thinks the system is the first of its type in the nation.

Really? First in the nation?

Ralph Crawford, assistant chief of forest protection, said the largely home-built system will cost nearly $2 million but won't have major, ongoing costs because it doesn't rely on cellphone or Internet service.

And, that means the information can only reach about 2 miles.

Grand Junction, Colorados GIS app couldn't be accessed on iPads (It's build on Flash), so the city wrote and launched I Map GJ (iTunes Preview). The website has a 29 page user guide. I suspect the app's is smaller.
