Quote of the Week

“Writing a spec and asking nicely if everyone would implement it gets you nowhere. The only way to get something to stick is to put up a compelling app, and let the market drive a standard. Tech people don’t play nice unless the market forces them to.”

Dave Winer (who “pioneered the development of weblogs, syndication (RSS), podcasting…”) in commenting on building standards for “identity.” I saw part of the quote in a piece about standards for social networking by Marc Canter (MacroMedia founder). I think we are seeing a changeover in geospatial from “asking nicely” (OGC) to market forces doing the pushing (KML). And, of course, it’s worth pointing out, those two are coming together.
