Off Topic: Oracle Ditches Traditional Press Releases
In the past few years a new form of sharing press information, the Social Media Release (primer), appeared. The idea was to share key quotes, links, facts, videos, images, etc. from which bloggers and other new (and traditional) media types would craft stories. Best practices involved hosting such a release on the providers website and linking to it from a traditional, narrative release. Current thinking suggests that it adds to, but does not replace, a traditional narrative release.
So, I was quite surprised after seeing a social media release on the wires (again, best practice is not to distribute such a release on the wires) from Oracle to learn that the company no longer issues traditional releases.
I went to Oracle’s press release page and confirmed that. I’m really curious to see how well that works.
