No More RFPs? Mashup Camp Request Yields Map in Hours

The ZD blog Between the Lines is following this story. Mashup Camp is scheduled for later in February, it’s a meeting about mashups. Yesterday one David Isenberg posted a request on his Mashups We Want website for mashup of where there’s cell coverage (beyond the cheesy offerings from carriers). In a matter of hours, two people had offerred solutions.

This is all very interesting, but consider the implications for our “mapmaking marketplace.” What if the model moves from those hard to write RFPs and bidding to a simple bounty: “first person to offer such and such a map get $5000.” We are very close to that now and bounties are known, especially in the open source world, so this is a logical migration.
