National Research Council: New US Elevation Data Needed
The National Research Council proposed an “Elevation for the Nation” program to created new elevation data for the U.S. Much of it is more than 30 years old and doesn’t accurately reflect the landscape. Most needed are updates to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s flood-mapping program maps used in its National Flood Insurance Program. The maps are used to determine who must purchase flood insurance. The report suggests using LiDAR for data capture.
