Mass Geography Teaching Workshop and other GIS Education News

Framingham State University (Massachusetts) is among those offering K-12 teachers geography education insights.

With a roughly $20,000 appropriation from the state, the school offers a weeklong summer institute for about 25 grade-school teachers from around Massachusetts.

"The idea is to give the teachers information they can take back to the classroom," Dargan said. "They don't have the background training, but they have the enthusiasm."

...Janey Camp, research assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Vanderbilt University. Camp has received funding from Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) to implement a pilot project to provide GIS training to teachers at Stratford, Glencliff and Hillsboro high schools.

Sadly, the article from Vanderbilt does not explain what GIS, GPS or ESRI (sic) are...and it cites the U.S. president as identifying geospatial technologies as a high growth area in 2004. The Dept of Labor determined that, not the president.

This week, GISTEC [Esri UAE distributor] finished the summer training program that was carried out from June 26 to August 16, 2011.

In this six weeks period, free basic courses on GIS and ArcGIS software were provided to five batches of trainees from different universities in the UAE. Most of the attendees were students. Few fresh graduates and faculty staff also participated in the program.

About 40 students/grads took the courses. The courses were part of GISTEC Career Development Program.
