Maryland, NYC Tackle Bike Issues with Maps

Planners [in Montgomery County, MD] are using a “heat map” to predict where the need is likely to be highest in the county for bicycling routes. The map uses a color-coded system, in which the “hottest” areas are highlighted in red and “coolest” in white. It is designed to help policymakers prioritize investment in bicycling routes and facilities.

How was it made?

The map is based on a points system, in which population and employment density are given the most weight, followed by proximity to public transportation, recreation centers and schools, Anspacher said.

And, no, there is no link to it. Update 9/15: Yes, there is! Anon provided this link in a comment.

- Washington Post

Wednesday morning, it [New York Mayor Bloomberg's administration] announced an aggressive plan to place 10,000 bikes at 600 stations in Manhattan and Brooklyn as part of a new bike share program.

Where to put them? There's a crowdsourced map for input. And, the maps skews requests to the wealthier parts of town.
