Local GIS Tidbits
www.gettingaroundillinois.com the site for travelers in the state is updated every 10 minutes. In winter it gets 50,000 hits a month. (Not sure why people still quote hits instead of pageviews; this Internet thing has been around long enough to learn the difference, no?) Why is it in the news? It’s been updated:
The redesign incorporates a modernized map, highlighted by new aerial imagery and expanded points of interest. In addition, the site offers improved access to data critical for the commercial trucking industry, such as information about weight restrictions on local roads and bridges.
But this is the best part - it uses mainstream technologies like NAVTEQ and ArcGIS Server!
The revisions to the site were developed by IDOT and GIS Solutions in Springfield using popular mainstream technologies, such as Microsoft Silverlight, ESRI ArcGIS Server, NAVTEQ and Map Tips. For a look at some of the new features you’ll find, check out this short video: http://www.youtube.com [real link]
The city clerk in Brush, Colorado is looking forward to some new software to compile and maintain records for a memorial park.
[Clerk] Guzman also said she has been considering the purchase of new computer software that would enable her to maintain more comprehensive cemetery records.
The new software would allow her to store much more information about each person buried in the cemetery, she said, and the information would be automatically sent everywhere she needs it.
Guzman said the new system would also come with a GIS (geographic information system) mapping program, which would allow her to avoid the cumbersome process of mapping gravesites by hand.
I wonder how the GIS avoids the cumbersome process of mapping the gravesites by hand.
Cederburg, WI had proposal to remove the grid numbers from the addresses which currently grace their envelopes and maps. But no, it didn’t come close to passing. So the old addresses remain:
City Hall’s address remains W63-N645 Washington Ave., rather than simply 645 Washington Ave., McHugh confirmed Tuesday. On the next block west, the Public Library’s complete street address is W63-N583 Hanover Ave.
The addressing standard dates back to the 1970s and was developed for public safety. Several other areas towns use the same methodology.
