The Iowa City Council has agreed to use a variety of criteria when voting on where to put affordable housing. Among them are education related data. How to visualize and model the data?
The council gave city staff the go-ahead to purchase a computer program at an estimated cost of $2,500 that will display data from a Geographic Information System. The program will generate maps of the city from the data parameters determined by the council, which then will be used by the council when evaluating affordable housing projects.
“Henderson [NV] will debut new applications on its website [on GIS Day], which will allow residents to take advantage of the information that GIS can offer. Members of the public can access information on schools, points of interest, zoning, watering groups, census and demographics information, and more”.
“The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is collecting maps of underground coal mines around the state.” O guess that’s VMI - volunteered mapped information.

Shreveport, LA wants to put in “share the road” signs which are mandated by state law to help motorists and cyclists travel safely on roads. Input about where to put the signs is requested by phone. “He said he welcomes suggestions and comments on the placement of signs and cycling groups can provide him their riding route by calling (318) 965-2329.” VGI by voice.
“Chicago residents became very concerned when many spotted a ravenous GPS equipped Coyote wandering around the city streets.” Problem: it was set lose by the animal commission to eat rats but the police and residents were not aware of that plan or that the coyote was not a danger to kids(?).
