Local GIS Tidbits
Pender County, NC is working to map its old cemetery. Most of the white cemeteries were documented in the 1970s, but the black ones were not. The county is asking residents to share their knowledge of local grounds so they can get into the GIS. (Hey, that’s VGI!)
Colorado Springs, CO is boasting that its GIS is more detailed than Google Maps. SpringsView includes “land records, streets, planning, public works, parks and recreation, public safety, and other topics of public interest.”

A $35,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety will pay for a new GIS in the Glenn County Planning and Public Works Department. 30K are for the data and analysis software and 5k for the hardware, all of which will come via ESRI. The County is looking to move to ESRI’s Small Government Enterprise License Agreement, which will save it 5K this fiscal year. It will also solve the problem of departments using different software packages that “don’t talk.”
