Local GIS Tidbits
Harwich, MA is on Cape Code and NSTAR, the utility company has electric lines there. NSTAR wants to use herbicide to keep vegetation away from its assets and make them accessible. The town has concerns, but legally, not leg to stand on. Still, State Rep. Sarah Peake has “called for a year-long moratorium on spraying, while Cape Cod Commission completes additional GIS (geographic information systems) mapping of the Cape.” The rep from NSTAR is unclear on why the commission needs a year to map but promises to “listen to what they say.”
Among those up for a 2009 Children’s Champion Award from Children’s Champions of Northwest Florida is the “Escambia County GIS Department, for providing opportunities for young people to explore technology.”
Comal County (TX) will acquire eight flood monitors to identify dangerous water levels at low-water crossings. The sensors will trigger lights that will warn drivers of high water and be linked to the online GIS. The cost: $600,000, 75 percent of which will be funded through state grants.
Branson, Missouri’s Doug Denney, planned t run as a Republican candidate for the 143rd District seat in the August primary. The problem is, based on his address, he should be running in the 142nd District.
Taney County Clerk Donna Neeley said Thursday afternoon that she wasn’t sure when the mistake was made but confirmed it was a “data entry error.” Denney said he may consider running for County Clerk.
Critical Paths is a collaboration between Vermont Fish and Wildlife, the National Wildlife Federation, the Vermont Natural Resources Council and a long appendix of academic contributors. The goal: make sure there are pathways for animals to safely cross the road (or other manmade features) to find food mates and other things needed to keep them healthy - and perhaps out of locals’ backyards.
