Just Making Maps
Softpedia offers an interesting and short editorial on the state of search engines. On mapping it notes, “Google Maps and Yahoo Maps are just the beginning. The fact that the two giants have offered free access to their mapping services opens a new era in local searching. Every skilled programmer will be able to make a map with all the details he wants.” And, perhaps that’s just it - these services are just offering mapping. Oh, you can zoom and pan and all, but it’s not GIS, not in the sense of what GIS professionals do. So maybe, and I’ve been trying to get my head around this, the rise of these new end-user and programming options are no more a threat to GIS companies than Microsoft’s MapPoint desktop product was to ArcInfo.
