International Tidbits

Viet Nam "Vietnamese Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Nguyen Phuong Nga ... said that the Chinese State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping’s launch of the Map World service, ...seriously infringes upon Vietnamese sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelagos, sovereign rights and national jurisdiction over Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zones within 200 nautical miles." Officials have called for China to remove the offending map representation and data.

India The Space Application Centre, (SAC) part of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched new version of its indigenous software IGIS for analysis of GIS and image processing data. There are new features, but one that's still in the works: analysis of microwave data.

Gobichettipalayam Municipality in Erode district is likely to have its GIS online by April. It's one of two municipalities selected for implementation under a World Bank Funded project. Tech by Tata International.

China

Nokia announced a deal with Chinese Internet firms Sina and Tencent to let phone users upload their location to social networks together with tips on local services via Nokia's map service. Subscribers to Sina's microblog and Tencent's QQ instant-messaging service will be able to share their location on the social networking sites using their Nokia Internet-connected mobile phones, Nokia said in a statement following the signing of the deal.

It should be up and running in Q1 of this year.
