Intergraph Restructures Into Two Divisions
Intergraph announced a restructuring of its operations from four to two divisions today. The plan calls for combining its Mapping and Geospatial Division, Public Safety Division, and Federal Divison into a single business unit called Security, Goverment, and Infrastructure (SG&I). Frankly, I’ve lost count of how many times the company has see-sawed between the marriage and divorce of these divisions. If memory serves, this is at least the third time these divisions have been together during the last decade. Ostensibly, resources are combined, development staffs leverage the same code base, and sales teams act to offer a suite of solutions to match any client need. Is this a good move? It was a good move ten years ago but eventually somebody gets a burr in their saddle that a specific industry solution, like an E911 Dispatching center, deserves a specific focus, a dedicated sales team that knows how to talk the language and very specialized software. Halsey Wise, CEO, is quoted in the press release say, "Streamlining our business into two divisions is part of our effort to leverage our technology more effectively and to capitalize on the cross selling opportunities that exist between our operations." I think I remember hearing the same quote ten years ago by then president Tommy Steele. The company has come full circle…or is it running in circles. It is hard to tell.
