IntelliTXT for Online Maps?
A post an Poynter today highlights how a journalism consultant has lambasted Ziff Davis (the big publisher) about using IntelliTXT on its websites. You’ve seen IntelliTXT - it’s those underlined green words on a page that when you mouse-over them show you an ad. The folks who own the pages get a cut of revenues from the advertisers. The ad system from Vibrant Media came out in 2004 and most journo folks were against it saying that editorial content was sacred. That voice was strong enough to get Forbes to drop them. Now apparently, ZD has picked up the ads.
That got me to thinking. Can we expect something like this on our maps soon? Beyond putting advertisements in local search results either on the map or in a list, could there be similar links to say the text that names a street? Or a country? Or would they link to the street centerline? Woudl these ads travel our handheld devices, too? Would there be an uproar against it?
