Intel Exits Navigation: Shuts Down Telmap

Intel acquired Telmap in 2011, hoping it'd be a valuable property that'd offer both end-user tools and white label technology for developers. The company, based in Isreal as shut down last week wtih some employees heading to other roles witin Intel Isreal.

Founded in 2000, the company mostly supported carriers outside the U.S.: "Telmap is the selected location solution provider of leading industry players Orange FT Group, Vodafone, Vodacom, SFR, Telefonica-O2, MTS, SingTel, OPTUS and more," boasts the 2007 copyright website. Other customers include Boost, the only carrier I've heard of here in the U.S. Among it's partners, Telmap will leave behind Inrix, NAVTEQ, and MapQuest.

One observer writing in the Israeli paper Globes suggests Telmap was too late with a free app and fell victim to the success of crowdsourced traffic provider waze, which also hails from Israel.
