Insuring Cattle Using Satellite Imagery
Say you are a herder in northern Kenya. You’d like to have insurance in case drought kills of your herd. The challenge for those who might implement such a scheme: how do you about the deaths? Is the herder to bring the bodies to the claim agent? No, that would not work. But, the International Livestock Research Institute in partnership with remote sensing researchers, found a way to measure draught based on the amount of forage available for grazing. If it gets too low, herders get a payout based on predicted mortality.
A trial is being administered by local firms Equity Bank and UAP insurance in Marsabit.
