Google Tidbits
The most interesting thing to me about Verizon’s launch of its 4G is this odd statement:
“About 70 percent of the 38 markets that Verizon is launching in initially will get the service starting Sunday. The company will have street view maps available on its Website starting Sunday to show exact locations where the network is available.”
What exactly are street view maps? Street level maps that show which houses are in and which are out? Do they even have that data (they don’t for cell coverage, as we all know…). It’s interesting that Street View has a certain meaning that just does not seem relevant here.
- CBS News though I first “heard” this on BOL which prompted me to say “huh?”
The Boring’s of Pittsburgh, who sued Google after one of its Street View cars came down their private driveway, had one suit tossed out, but another based on trespassing went to trial. The two parties agreed to minimal damages: Google paid them $1.
On Sunday Google announced updates to the Google Maps API v3 including bouncing map markers. They can “drop in” or “bounce.” Only issue: it doesn’t work in IE 6. Yes, you can see a sample in the Google blog post below.
This “autocomplete” map from Very Small Array is making the rounds. Each state is named based on what Google autocomplete suggested the name should be.
