Google Reverts to Pre-Katrina Imagery in NO, Angers Some

The AP reports that locals are upset that Google has updated its imagery of the area hit by hurrican Katrina with pre-hurricane images. Some suggest conspiracy and the product manager notes he was not consulted, but that the imagery is the best available.

Among those quoted in the article is Craig Colten, a geographer at Louisiana State University. He uses Google Earth in his classes and calls the switch “unbelievable.” (Mr. Colten was in Illinois back when I was in college and actually presented me with a state geography award.) The region has some leverage as Google is coming to call on the state to sell some new tools in the coming weeks. David Gisclair, chairman of the Louisiana GIS Council, hopes to get some answers and maybe changes then.
