Google AutoLink AutoOn? Not for me…
Recall the brouhaha about the Google Toolbar’s then new “AutoLink” button. If pressed by the user it automatically added links to certain things – ISBN book numbers linked to booksellers, addresses to mapping tools, FedEx numbers to tracking, etc. The world was up in arms since it changed the intent of the original webpage writer. Google at the time said not to worry, the user would have to turn it on first, that is, click the button, to make those links appear. In the latest version, say reports, AutoLink is on by default. That was not my experience after I downloaded the new toolbar this morning. The default after pushing the button was to Google Maps for mapping, but I have no issues with that. Perhaps I misunderstood the allegation? Or Google changed it?
