GIS Government News Weekly: Maine’s Future, Wisconsin Traffic, Avenza Courts Indiana DNR

The Future of Maine

The Maine Futures Community Mapper (MFCM) is a web-based tool that helps Mainers: (1)identify locations that are most suitable for future development, conservation, agricultural uses, or forestry; (2) identify potential conflicts and compatibilities between different land uses; and(3) envision their future landscape under different possible scenarios of change.

The tool is very slick! (map at right)

Wyoming Primary: Find Your Voting Location and See the Ballot

Start by going here: http://fremontwy.greenwoodmap.com

Sadly, there are about 10 steps to get to the ballot. The good news: they are listed here.

Wisconsin's Traffic Fatalities Back to 2001

The feature rolled out Tuesday is the result of a partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Safety and the Wisconsin Traffic Operations and Safety Laboratory.

The Google Map solution categorizes fatalities by  Bike,  Pedestrian, Speed, Construction Zone and Motorcycle.

Avenza Gets NYC Park Maps, Now Wants Indiana

Avenza announced via a press release it now offers free PDF maps for New York State parks. The release says the maps are the result of a partnership, but it's my sense the state paid Avenza to make the maps. Update 8/21 see below: "not a single penny has changed hands between Avenza and NY State Parks." And, with NY state in the bag, Avenza is pitching another state via Twitter, Indiana.

@INdnrnews we've recently partnered with @NYstateparks and would love to also provide your #maps to hikers. What do you think? — 3 hours 55 min ago

Open Data for Wyoming

The Wyoming Geospatial Hub is now live! The open data part, GeoHub Pathfinder, is just one part.

The GeoHub Pathfinder is one of three loosely-coupled data and metadata delivery applications of the Wyoming Geospatial Hub. To search through a comprehensive list of statewide data, web mapping services, and agency documents, go to the GeoHub Explorer. To download aerial photography and topographic maps, visit the GeoHub Imagery.

Licensing? Many of the datasets I found have "No license specified." One dataset has a specific license from WDOT:

Use of Data and Products: The user assumes the entire risk related to its use of this data. WYDOT is providing this data "as is," and WYDOT disclaims any and all warranties, whether express or implied, including (without limitation) any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
